Those words never cease to take my breath away. Mainly written by Gouverneur Morris, a Pennsylvania delegate to the 1787 Constitutional Convention held at Independence Hall in Philadelphia, the Preamble is perhaps the most well-known part of the Constitution. It shows that the new government is for the people and by the people, and lists what it set out to do to protect each person and our posterity. This brief introductory statement of the fundamental purposes and guiding principles has led courts to refer to it as reliable evidence of the Founding Fathers’ intentions regarding the Constitution’s meaning and what they hoped it would achieve. While it does not assign powers to the federal government, or provide specific limitations on government action, it is a guidepost — one that has guided my life as an American.
Especially now. As a journalist, a Jew, an entrepreneur, woman and mother, I believe it is my duty to uphold the truths we hold to be self-evident. That all men (and women) are created equal, that we are endowed by our creator with certain unalienable rights: life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

On a personal note: To say that the changes we are experiencing in our world is life-altering is a ridiculous understatement. Every day, seemingly every hour, a change is being made to the rules and regulations that have kept us safe and free. It won’t take long for ripple effect to impact us all. This is the new epidemic. At Inkandescent, we are responding by doing the only thing we know to do: Share stories on our magazines and podcast/video channels, expand our empathy, build bridges wher we can, and mostly support those in need. As the Jewish sage Hillel famously said in 1839: “If not now, then when?”
First up: We launch our project this month with a focus on a man who is, in my opinion, the most thoughtful, articulate politician of our time: Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker. We invite you to watch/listen to a speech he delivered to the Trades Union Congress: How To Spot An Idiot.
In it, Pritzker explains: “Empathy and kindness are considered weak. Many important people look at the vulnerable only as rungs on a ladder to the top. I’m here to tell you that when someone’s path through this world is marked with acts of cruelty, they have failed the first test of an advanced society.
