July 18, 2022 — Author Piper Huguley introduces us to truly amazing black women that history has not focused

Monday Morning Magic, July 18, 2022 — With the historic swearing-in this summer of Ketanji Brown Jackson as the first black woman on the Supreme Court, it seems only fitting to shine this week’s Inkandescent spotlight on Professor Piper Huguley, author of a series of historical fiction novels that teach us about some of the amazing black women that history has not focused on.

Case in point: In her current book, By Her Own Design, we meet Ann Lowe, the fashion designer to the social register. Among other prestigious accomplishments, she designed the widely acclaimed wedding gown for Jackie Kennedy, yet for years she remained largely unknown. • Her first books are part of the Home to Milford College series, including Amazon bestsellers The Lawyer’s Luck, The Preacher’s Promise, The Mayor’s Mission, and The Representative’s Revolt.
  • Piper’s next series, Migrations of the Heart, follows the loves and lives of African American sisters during America’s most significant internal migration in the first part of the twentieth century. Click here to learn about all of her books.
  • By Her Own Design is available here.

We leave you with this parting thought from Piper, who tells us why she believes that it is so important that all students (young and older) know about the black women who made history: “The history we’ve been taught in school is incomplete. People like to fuss about biopics and, by extension, historical fiction, but books like these make people want to know more about history that has not been taught to us. I call it ‘putting butts in seats in history classes,’ which is not a bad thing.”

Until next Monday: We wish you courage, patience, and peace amidst the chaos. — Hope Katz Gibbs, founder, and president, Inkandescent® Inc. Inkandescent.us
